…make your way to the Cameco Capital Performing Arts Center in Port Hope on Thursday November 3rd for a sweet evening of Johnny Cash goodness, all in the spirit of raising money and awareness of the good work of Green Wood Coalition…a grassroots initiative that Blackbird Studio is honored to work alongside of each week. And if an evening of Johnny Cash wasn’t grand enough, there’s going to be an inspiring art show in the lobby of the theatre, showcasing the work of the Green Wood Art Group. It’s going to be an evening you won’t want to miss.  Trust me.

Tickets are $20 in advance / $25 at the door.

8pm.

We’ll see you there…

neighborhood watch.

my neighborhood isn’t exactly glamorous. just a hodge podge bunch of houses on the edge of downtown, close to a big park and a small creek. there’s a lot of traffic and a lot of kids and a lot of dogs and a lot of cyclists. in the almost 7 years that i’ve called this lot home, i’ve seen a lot of neighbors come and go. on my little stretch of the street nobody seems to stay put for too long. i’ve also got a lot of neighbors who i’ve never seen. ever. that’s kind of strange.

good advice.

but the times are slowly a changin’. there’s something brewing around here that smells an awful lot like community. and i like it. i like it a lot. i caught wind of it tonight as i wandered through the halls of a house, just 1. 5 blocks up from mine. this small bungalow was packed full of artists – designers – chefs – crafters. all set up and selling their work on tables and couches and counters and ironing boards. in bedrooms and kitchens and living rooms and hallways.

it was wonderful. and inspiring. and full of do-it-yourself goodness. and at some point it hit me that most of us there, sharing and selling our work, all lived within a few blocks of each other. like real, true, borrow-a-cup-of-sugar kind of neighbors. who knew?

my street is still noisy. and the wind still blows the trash around and the late night noise still wakes me up sometimes. but all of that seems easier to swallow when, every now and then, i can find myself walking around the place i call home,  in the company of like minded neighbors and strangers, coming and working together for something good and true and important like art. you know?

by 3 o’clock on saturday this sweet little house/art show will be done. but i really hope that something good and creative and collaborative has just begun. it is so easy to get caught up in trying to figure this life out alone. it is so easy to forget how much better, how much easier, how much richer it is when we do it together.
